Last year Conor Lane (pictured right with his girlfriend Elisa Brugger) was 24 years old and had just finished a paid internship at CNN in London when he was diagnosed with Ewing's 

Sarcoma, an extremely rare bone cancer. 

The diagnosis was shattering and changed everything at a time when Conor's life was going well.  After more than a year of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and major surgery to remove the tumour, Conor is now well on the road to recovery.

Dr Jeremy George, Consultant and Respiratory Medicine Physician at UCLH and a Trustee of UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation, was one of the first consultants to examine the tumour, describing it as 'the size of a melon.'  Promptly referred to the specialist sarcoma team headed by Professor Jeremy Whelan at UCLH, Conor praises the care that he received at the hands of the NHS, and the treatment that he received in the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre, saying;

'The Macmillan Centre, where I went for chemo, is a beautiful, inspiring, state-of-the-art building.  My chemo was long (nine hours a day for three days, every three weeks, over a period of four months) but I always had a private room and superb care. There are no patients on trolleys and no apparent overcrowding. My care, by a multidisciplinary team, has been outstanding and we are never sorry to enter the building.'

When the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre opened in 2012 it was one of the top cancer centres in Europe, and since then thousands of patients have been treated there. UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation is incredibly proud to have played a key role in securing funding for the development of the Cancer Centre, and continues to fundraise for it so that patients like Conor are able to receive the best possible care at the most difficult times.
